Franklin Elementary School sits on five acres of land that were purchased by the school district in 1926 for $60,000. The building was designed by Francis D. Rutherford. The 1933 Long Beach earthquake caused severe structural damage. Tents were temporarily set up for classes while reconstruction took place. The campus grew rapidly to accommodate the post-WWII baby boom. Additional classrooms were added in 1947 and 1949, and the current library/computer lab was constructed in 1955 as a multipurpose room.
Today, the school community is highly active, with programs heavily supported by the local PTA and fundraising overseen by the Santa Monica Education Foundation.
