Los Angeles sports teams: Pro, college and high school

Collage of LA-area sports team logos displayed over a sunset Los Angeles skyline (Lakers, LA, Rams, Dodgers, USC, UCLA Bruins, Vikings, Dolphins, Mariners, Crossroads).

Southern California is home to some of the most recognizable and successful sports programs in the world. From the Dodgers and Lakers to the Trojans, Bruins and Samohi Vikings, there is always a big game, rivalry matchup or championship run worth following.

PRO TEAMS

Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers are one of baseball’s signature franchises, with nine World Series titles and a history that runs from Brooklyn, New York to Chavez Ravine. With legends like Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Fernando Valenzuela, Clayton Kershaw and Shohei Ohtani, few teams anywhere can match the Dodgers for history, star power and fandom.

Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers boast 17 championships and an all-time roster that includes Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. From “Showtime” in the 1980s to the Kobe-Shaq era and their most recent title in 2020, they remain one of the most valuable brands in professional sports.

Los Angeles Clippers
While they don’t share the historical resume of their cross-city rivals, The Clippers have built a strong following during the “Lob City” era with Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. The franchise reached the Western Conference finals for the first time in 2021, making its deepest playoff run to date and signaling a new era of relevance.

Los Angeles Kings
The Kings have been part of the Los Angeles sports scene since 1967, but the franchise’s defining stretch came with Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014. Those title teams, led by Jonathan Quick, Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty, helped raise the profile of hockey in Southern California. They may not draw the same casual attention as the Dodgers or Lakers, but the Kings are a proven championship franchise.

Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have a complicated Southern California history, beginning in Los Angeles before relocating to San Diego, where they achieved their greatest success, including the 1963 AFL Championship. Since returning to Los Angeles in 2017, the team has posted a combined record of 80–74 and has won just one playoff game, continuing to search for sustained postseason success in their current era.

Los Angeles Rams
The Rams have have traveled from Cleveland to Los Angeles to Anaheim to St. Louis and finally back to Los Angeles again. The franchise has won two Super Bowls overall and delivered one of the biggest local titles in recent years by beating Cincinnati in Super Bowl LVI, on their home field, at SoFi Stadium. From the Fearsome Foursome to Eric Dickerson to the current SoFi era, the Rams offer far more history than many casual fans realize.

COLLEGE TEAMS

USC Trojans
The University of Southern California is a powerhouse in college sports, especially in football, where the Trojans have produced a record eight Heisman Trophy winners. Legends like Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Marcus Allen, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Caleb Williams, Ronnie Lott and Junior Seau have all worn the cardinal and gold.  In the past decade, USC has picked up 13 NCAA championships in women’s beach volleyball, women’s water polo and men’s track and field.  The school has also produced a record 500 Olympians who have won more than 300 medals.

UCLA Bruins
The University of California Los Angeles is the winningest program in men’s college basketball history with 11 NCAA championships. The Bruins’ most famous run came under coach John Wooden, when they won 10 national titles in 12 seasons, including seven in a row, with legends such as Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Bill Walton helping define the sport. In all, the school has fielded 127 national championship teams including recent NCAA titles in women’s basketball, men’s water polo, women’s water polo, men’s volleyball, women’s soccer and softball.  174 UCLA student athletes have also earned Olympic medals.

Santa Monica College Corsairs
Santa Monica College may not have the national profile of USC or UCLA, but it plays a vital role in the local sports landscape. The Corsairs compete in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, and more, with home venues like Corsair Field, Corsair Gym, and the Santa Monica Swim Center deeply tied to the community. The program has won seven national championships in men’s volleyball—the only junior college to do so—and captured the California Community College Athletic Association football title in 2025.

HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS

Santa Monica High School Vikings
Santa Monica High School has one of the strongest athletic identities on the Westside, with seven CIF football championships and recent titles in soccer, girls basketball, softball, and wrestling. Notable alumni include Super Bowl players Dennis Smith, Dennis Thurman, and Mel Kaufman, as well as MLB players Rick Monday and Tyler Skaggs and Olympic medalist and WWE star Ronda Rousey.

Palisades Charter High School Dolphins
Palisades Charter High School boasts one of the most storied athletic legacies in Southern California prep history, highlighted by its historical status as “Volleyball Town USA.”  The Dolphins also hold the record for most CIF-LA City tennis championships with 50 total.  Under legendary coach Bud Kling, the boys team won four national championships.  Pali also capture the CIF boys basketball championship in 2026 and has been the team to beat in both boys and girls lacrosse for more than a decade.

Crossroads Roadrunners
Crossroads has an unusually strong pipeline to the NBA. Baron Davis starred there in the 1990s, leading the team to a CIF state title before an NBA career that included time with the Clippers. Shareef O’Neal helped bring another state title before playing at UCLA, and Ziaire Williams went on to become a first-round NBA Draft pick.

Brentwood School Eagles
The Brentwood Eagles compete in the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS), primarily within the Gold Coast League, where they have secured numerous team and individual milestones.  The school’s most accomplished teams are baseball, girls basketball, track and field and cross country.

Saint Monica Prep Mariners
Saint Monica Prep has established itself as a true local contender with meaningful accomplishments. The Mariners won a CIF football title in 2023, boys soccer entered 2026 as the reigning CIF champion, and alum Kyle Williams (Class of 2020) went on to play in the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.
