The Santa Monica–Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) oversees public education in the cites of Santa Monica and Malibu. Headquartered in Santa Monica, the district serves over 8,700 students and employs roughly 1,400 staff members.
The first classroom in SMMUSD opened in March 1876 with 52 students, making it one of the long-standing civic institutions in the area. Today, the district’s mission is to provide extraordinary achievement for all students while closing the achievement gap. It places a strong emphasis on civic learning, ethnic studies, college and career readiness, STEM, and Career Technical Education.
Graduation rates are around 95 percent, with solid performance in math and reading.
