Roosevelt Elementary is a public elementary school located on the north side of Santa Monica.  It is one of seven elementary schools in the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District.  The school is named in honor of Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States.

History

1907 – Original campus is opened at 6th Street and Montana Avenue.

1933 – Roosevelt Elementary campus sustains significant damage from Long Beach earthquake.  Students are briefly forced to attend classes in tents.

1934 – School is relocated to its current location.  The new campus is designed in the PWA Moderne style, featuring landscaped courtyards, expansive windows, and flexible concrete patios.

1940s – Campus is expanded with buildings designed by Joe M. Estep.

2026 – Roosevelt campus undergoes major overhaul with construction of a new auditorium, library and new buildings to house Kindergarten and TK programs.

Demographics

For the school year 2025-26, Roosevelt School had an enrollment of 538 students in grades six to eight.  Approximately 53 percent identified as white, 18 percent as hispanic, 12 percent as Asian and five percent as African American.

Zoning

Roosevelt Elementary School serves families residing in the area bounded by Entrada Drive to the north, Colorado Avenue to the south, 15th Street to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.  Most students continue on to Lincoln Middle School and Santa Monica High School.

Funding & Support

Programs at Roosevelt Elementary are heavily supported by the school’s local PTA.  Additional funds are provided through the Santa Monica Education Foundation.  After school activities are provided by the City of Santa Monica’s CREST program and the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club.

In 2026, Roosevelt Elementary was ranked 75 out of 5,991 public elementary schools in California by Niche.
