SCOTUS Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of the United States has dealt a huge blow to illegal immigrants.

In a rare unanimous verdict today, the nation’s highest court said immigrant people with Temporary Protection Status (TPS) may not receive “green cards” to remain in the country permanently.

TPS currently permits nearly 400,000 refugees from 12 different countries to live and work in the U.S.

“The TPS program gives foreign nationals nonimmigrant status, but it does not admit them,” Justice Elena Kagan wrote on behalf of the court.  “So the conferral of TPS does not make an unlawful entrant…eligible (for a green card).”

The case at hand involved two individuals from El Salvador who have been living in the United State for more than two decades.

Jose Santos Sanchez and his wife believed that by being permitted to remain and receiving humanitarian protections, they were being formally admitted under immigration law.

While the SCOTUS has disagreed, there is legislation that has already passed the House of Representatives which could change the process of gaining admission.

President Joe Biden has indicated that he supports the change.
