Record Surplus proudly proclaims itself “The Last Record Store.”
For owner Chris Vagnoni, that’s not just a slogan— its a mission statement. His store is the kind of place that reminds you why people still love digging through bins, flipping jackets, and finding music the old-fashioned way.
“Physical media is something to hold on to, and it’s also something to pass on,” he told The Corsair in 2025. “Take good care of your physical media and it’s going to last for a long time.”
Since opening in 1985, this independent shop has survived waves of new formats, streaming services, and shifting listening habits — yet somehow it still feels like a neighborhood stronghold for anyone who still believes music should be held in your hands.
Today it’s one of the largest record stores in Los Angeles, with over 100,000 vinyl records and CDs crammed into floor‑to‑ceiling shelves, covering everything from rock, jazz, and punk to hip‑hop, classical, and soul.
“I try to keep records in the shop that sell, I will also take gambles on new stuff,” Vagnoni explained in 2025. “My taste is narrow but I like to think it’s broad. I’ll take risks with new bands that I’m familiar with, that my customers maybe aren’t. But if I have multiple customers asking about a band, I’ll carry their stuff.”
Record Surplus began on Pico Boulevard, where it spent 26 years building a loyal following before moving to the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard. and Centinela Avenue in 2011. The store was originally owned by Neil Canter and Cheryl Perkey, who helped cement its reputation as a go‑to destination for collectors and casual listeners alike. Around 2021, Vagnoni, a 20 year employee, took over as owner— turning the place into a literal second home rather than just a job.
“Physical media is alive and well within our shop within our community, within Los Angeles, within the whole state of California, within the whole United States,” he says. “It’s alive in every country out there. Except maybe Antarctica. But I bet you there’s a bit of physical media there too.”
