Cookie Good in Santa Monica isn’t your average bakery

Cookie Good isn’t your average bakery.  It’s the kind of place that makes you wonder why you even bothered pretending you “don’t really like dessert.”

Their rotating menu reads like a childhood fever dream.  Sure, everyone loves a good chocolate chip, but its the Cheetos Cookie — a fluorescent orange, sweet-and-salty marvel — that elevated husband and wife team Ross and Melanie Canter into local celebrities.

Their origin story is peak L.A.: a Hollywood writers’ strike, a guy who loved baking, and a side hustle that suddenly wasn’t so “side” anymore.

Cookies spilled from a jar labeled 'cookie good' with the slogan 'It's how you wanna feel' visible in the foreground.

“When I was in college and I had internships in the movie business, to make a little bit of money, I started a brownie business on the side,” Ross tells The Sun.   “In those days, brownies were chocolate or maybe chocolate with walnut.  They really weren’t flavored.”  Ross –– whose grandfather and great uncles brought the legendary Canter’s Deli to Los Angeles –– worked practically around the clock baking batches of brownies and testing new flavors.

He eventually found success in show business.  His writing credits include Curious George and ABC’s What About Brian? But during the Hollywood writers strike in 2008, he knew it was time to lean fully into a life of flour and sugar.

“We started this out of our home and were like ‘lets see what happens.’  Then the strike ended, but I still kept making cookies.  The people who had gotten them wanted more.”

The Canters opened up their first and only location in 2014, directly across the street from Douglas Park.  The following year they a hired 15 year-old high school student named Gracie Abrams to work the front counter.  (Spoiler alert: she did not continue in the cookie biz.)

Every May and October, the couple donate a portion of proceeds from the store to the Breast Cancer Care & Research Fund.  In 2025, their loyal Santa Monica fan base rallied in support of the business when Ross and Melanie lost their home in the Palisades wildfire.

With business booming and lines often out the door, Ross admits there have been fleeting thoughts of opening additional stores.  “I didn’t do this because I am an entrepreneur,” he says.  “I did this because I am creative and I like to have fun.  We came close a bunch of times over the years, but I don’t have the brain for that kind of expansion.”
