SoFi Stadium: History, parking, seating and fun facts

Opened in September 2020, SoFi Stadium is one of the most ambitious sports and entertainment venues ever built. Home to both the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, the indoor-outdoor stadium has quickly become a premier southern California destination for NFL games, major concerts, and international sporting events.

With a capacity of approximately 70,000 — expandable to more than 100,000 for major events — the venue is among the largest and most technologically advanced stadiums in the country.  More than 260 luxury suites and over 13,000 premium seats are built into the venue.  Built at a cost of roughly $5 billion, it is widely recognized as the most expensive sports stadium ever constructed.

Located in Inglewood on the former site of Hollywood Park racetrack, SoFi Stadium is part of a much larger sports and entertainment district developed by Rams owner E. Stanley Kroenke. It has already hosted the Super Bowl, major college football and wrestling events, and record-setting concerts, with more global showcases still ahead.

Brief History

• SoFi Stadium was built on the 298-acre site of the former Hollywood Park Racetrack, which operated from 1938 to 2013.
• Kroenke privately funded the development as part of the effort to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles.
• The stadium opened in September 2020 and is one of the few NFL venues shared by two franchises: the Rams and Chargers.
• In 2019, SoFi acquired the naming rights under a 20-year deal reportedly worth more than $30 million per year.
• The final price tag climbed to about $5.5 billion, making it the most expensive stadium ever built.

Iconic Moments

2022:  SoFi Stadium hosted Super Bowl LVI.

2023:  The stadium hosted the College Football Playoff National Championship.

2023:  WrestleMania 39 brought one of WWE’s biggest annual events to Inglewood.

2023:  Taylor Swift became the first and only artist to sell out six shows at SoFi Stadium on a single tour.  The performances were filmed for a live concert movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

2026:  The stadium is scheduled to host matches during the FIFA World Cup.

2028:  SoFi Stadium is slated to serve as a venue for the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

What Makes It Special?

SoFi Stadium is the NFL’s first true indoor-outdoor stadium, built beneath a massive translucent canopy that covers the seating bowl while still allowing natural light and air to move through the space.

It features a one-of-a-kind Samsung Infinity Screen –– a double-sided oval videoboard suspended above the field. At 120 yards long and weighing 2.2 million pounds, it is one of the most visually striking features in any stadium anywhere.

The stadium’s design was also shaped by its location near LAX. Because of FAA height restrictions, the playing field was dug roughly 100 feet below ground level, giving the venue its sunken profile while preserving its enormous scale.

Parking

Parking at SoFi Stadium should be planned in advance, especially for major games and concerts. The venue strongly recommends purchasing parking before arrival, as on-site parking availability may be limited or unavailable on the day of the event.

• Parking should be purchased online before arriving at the stadium.
• For many events, no on-site parking is sold on event day.
• Rideshare and drop-off options are available through designated transportation zones.
• The surrounding Hollywood Park district can experience significant congestion before and after major events.

Know Before You Go

SoFi Stadium has event policies that are stricter than many smaller venues.

• Clear bags must be no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″.
• Small non-clear bags may be permitted if they do not exceed 4.5″ x 6.5″.
• Service animals are allowed, but emotional support animals are not.
• Outside food and beverages are generally prohibited, with limited exceptions including one factory-sealed water bottle up to 20 ounces per person.
• Guests should check the stadium policy page before attending for the latest event-day rules.
