Since opening its doors in 1922, The Hollywood Bowl has offered a stage to some of the most illustrious names in music across all genres. With a seating capacity of approximately 17,500, it ranks among the largest natural outdoor amphitheaters in the United States.
Recognized worldwide for its distinctive bandshell, “The Bowl” is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and has been the site of historic performances by legendary artists from Luciano Pavarotti to The Beatles.

What sets the venue apart is its relaxed, open-air atmosphere, where concertgoers can picnic at their seats, enjoy pre-show dining, and take in sweeping views of the surrounding hills as the sun sets.
Whether it’s a classical program, a film night, or a sold-out summer concert, the Hollywood Bowl offers an experience that is as much about the setting as it is about the performance. There are few live music experiences more distinctly Los Angeles than spending a summer evening under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl.
Brief History
- The Theatre Arts Alliance Inc. bought the land in 1919 for $47,500.
- The Hollywood Bowl kicked off its first official season on July 11, 1922, with Alfred Hertz conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
- The venue stands in a bowl-shaped section of the Hollywood Hills once known as Daisy Dell, a site chosen in part for its natural acoustics.
- Eating was forbidden inside the Bowl until 1952.
- The Bowl’s now-famous shell has evolved over time and the current structure followed earlier shell designs, including two by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright.
- The Hollywood Bowl Museum opened in 1984 and was later rebuilt as the Edmund D. Edelman Hollywood Bowl Museum in 1996.
Iconic Moments
1923: To celebrate the final payment on the Bowl’s debt, the mortgage was burned on stage.
1926: Composer Percy Grainger and Swedish poet Ella Viola Strom were married on stage before a crowd of 22,000.
1964: The Beatles performed at the Hollywood Bowl for the first time, creating some of the venue’s most enduring pop-culture moments.
1968: The Doors recorded their now-legendary July 5 performance, later released in full as Live at the Bowl ’68.
2021: Billie Eilish used the Hollywood Bowl as the setting for Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, filmed without a live audience and featuring Finneas and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
What Makes It Special
The Hollywood Bowl is more than a concert venue — it is a Los Angeles institution with a setting that few venues in the world can match. The hillside location, open-air design, and famous shell give every performance a distinctly Southern California atmosphere.
It is also one of the rare major venues where the pre-show ritual is part of the appeal. Picnicking, arriving early, and settling in as the sun goes down are as much a part of the Bowl tradition as the music itself.
Seating Chart
The Hollywood Bowl’s seating layout is one of the most distinctive in Southern California, with sections rising up the hillside and offering a wide range of views and price points. Guests should always check the official seating map for their performance before purchasing tickets.

Parking & Transportation
Parking at the Hollywood Bowl is extremely limited, stacked, and often sold in advance, so planning ahead is essential. The venue strongly encourages guests to use Park & Ride, Bowl Shuttle, Metro, or rideshare instead of driving directly to the grounds.
- Onsite parking is limited and stacked, which means early exits are generally not possible.
- Parking should be purchased in advance whenever possible.
- Rideshare pickup and drop-off is located in Lot C at 6655 Odin Street.
- The Metro B Line to Hollywood/Highland connects to a free Bowl shuttle for riders with a valid TAP card or GoMetro round-trip pass.
- Bowl shuttle lots run continuously every 15 to 20 minutes beginning about two and a half hours before concert time.
- Park & Ride buses depart from locations across Los Angeles County at scheduled times before performances.
Know Before You Go
At least half the fun of a night at the Hollywood Bowl is the picnic. For most LA Phil-presented performances, guests may bring their own food and drinks, including alcohol, while official Picnic Boxes can also be preordered in advance for pickup on site.
