The Michigan Avenue entrance to Santa Monica High School

The Santa Monica High School senior busted for posting threats on social media last week will not be returning to campus anytime soon.

“The student will remain off campus while next steps regarding this incident are determined,” Principal Antonio M. Shelton announced in an email to parents Sunday night.

Shelton also revealed that there will continue to be an increased police presence around the school during the final days before winter break.

On December 6, a threatening message posted to Snapchat prompted Santa Monica Police to detain one of Samohi’s approximately 2800 students at the front gate.  The student — whose identity is seen on screen captures but has not been officially named in the media — has not been permitted to return to campus since.

Here is Shelton’s complete message:

Dear Samohi families,

We begin our first semester finals this week.  The semester exam schedule is attached to this email.

In light of the events that took place last Monday, the Santa Monica Police Department will continue to have a presence in and around campus.  I am aware that anxiety levels are high for all since the incident.  Therefore, it is important to note that l can legally share with you that we are following the California Education Code as it relates to the student’s discipline.  The student will remain off campus while next steps regarding this incident are determined.

Although I do not anticipate any disruptions to the educational environment, I feel it is important that everyone feels safe.  The presence of our police will hopefully relieve some of the anxiety some have been experiencing since the events of last week.

Our teaches will continue to use the instructional strategies shared with them by our Mental Health Coordinator as we support students’ social and emotional well-being.  I also encourage you to take a look at our Mental Health and Community Resources page on our website.

On a final note, please subscribe to WeTip.  Any threats of crime, vandalism, and harm may be

reported anonymously: 1-800-78-CRIME or online at www.wetip.com. Please, if you see or hear something, say something.

Sincerely,

Antonio M. Shelton, Ed.D.

Principal
