It’s the biopic you never knew you needed.
I Am Honey Boo Boo — a revealing Lifetime movie which features narration by the former Toddlers & Tiaras star herself — is set to premiere May 17.
Honey Boo Boo, whose real name is Alana Thompson, became a worldwide sensation at age four, after gaining fame on the kiddie pageant circuit. In 2012, she landed her own reality series, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, starring alongside her mother ( “Mama June” Thompson) and other family members.
But the experience wasn’t all redneck games and go-go juice.
Per a network announcement, the film will offer “a glimpse into what went on behind the scenes, revealing how [Alana’s] on-stage persona concealed the harsh reality of constant criticism and family struggles, particularly with her mother.”
In an Instagram post today, Thompson — now 18 and a nursing student at St. Regis University in Colorado — added: “This film tells my story, the real one. Beyond the glitter, the pageants, and the catchphrases, there was a lot going on behind the scenes. I’m narrating the film myself because nobody can tell it like I can. From family struggles and hard truths to finding my own voice, I Was Honey Boo Boo shows the side of child stardom the cameras didn’t always catch.”
