The Rocky Horror Picture Show is officially headed to the Las Vegas Sphere in 2027. For Westsiders in search of campy chaos, it creates the perfect excuse to pack a bag, grab a costume and time-warp through the desert.

And if all this feels a little familiar to Santa Monica and the Westside, that’s because Rocky Horror has been part of our local culture for decades. The cult favorite flick has played with a live shadow cast every Saturday at the Nuart Theatre for decades, turning the late night event into a weekly ritual for generations of fans.

Sphere Entertainment said the production will use its “advanced technologies” to enhance the original film for the venue’s giant curved screen. The company also noted that the experience is part of a push to create immersive live entertainment that “pushes the boundaries of technology and storytelling.

“Since The Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered in 1975, it redefined audience participation and became a cultural phenomenon,” Sphere Chairman and CEO Jim Dolan said in the company’s announcement. “With Sphere, we have the opportunity to take that spirit of immersion to an entirely new level.”

The original film, starring Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Tim Curry, bombed at the box office before becoming one of the biggest cult movies ever made. Its midnight-screening tradition — where guests are encouraged to dance, scream dialogue and even throw items at the screen –– began in New York in 1976 and has continued ever since.

No date has been announced yet, but the show is expected to debut after The Wizard of Oz finishes its run at the Sphere in December.

The Sphere — constructed for a reported $2.3 billion — boasts 17,000 seats and a massive 160,000-square-foot, 16K-resolution wraparound LED screen that curves up and over the audience.  In addition to super high definition movies, The Sphere also has multi-media concerts scheduled by Kenny Chesney, Backstreet Boys and The Eagles.
