Santa Monica police are planting a flag in the heart of downtown.
The SMPD has opened a new police substation inside Santa Monica Place, putting officers front and center in one of the city’s busiest — and closely watched — areas. The new hub at 395 Santa Monica Place, Suite 122, launched on May 28 with a ribbon-cutting event drawing city leaders, officers, and local business groups.
The goal: visibility, faster response, and a stronger grip on public safety.
“This substation represents more than a physical space,” Police Chief Darrick Jacob said. “It represents presence, partnership, and accountability.”
In plain terms — the new police substation means more cops, closer to the action. Officials say the site will function as both a command center and a community drop-in point, giving residents, tourists, and business owners easier access to officers on the ground.
The move is part of the city’s broader Public Safety Realignment Plan targeting crime, homelessness, traffic issues, and community outreach. Leaders hope the постоян presence downtown will help deter problems before they escalate. Partners including PRISM Places and Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. helped bring the project together.
The police substation is open daily from noon to 11 p.m., with officials encouraging the public to stop in and connect with officers. Whether the added presence will make a noticeable dent in downtown crime is the big question.
