L.A. Kings game may be coming to Santa Monica

Could this become a reality?

Nothing says California quite like ice hockey by the beach.

Santa Monica city officials are in early discussions with the L.A. Kings to potentially bring a one-of-a-kind outdoor NHL game to the sand, a concept that has floated around for more than a decade but is now picking up real momentum.

While no official date or opponent has been announced, the leading idea centers on Beach Parking Lot 1 North, just steps from the Santa Monica Pier. The proposed footprint includes a roughly 15,000-square-foot stretch of sand north of the beach bike path, bordered by the Pacific Ocean and extending toward Lifeguard Tower 14—setting the stage for what could be one of the most visually striking games in league history.

As unconventional as it sounds, the NHL has already proven it can make warm-weather hockey work. In 2026, the league hosted outdoor games in Florida using advanced, climate-controlled rink technology housed inside temporary enclosures, which were removed before puck drop. A similar approach could make a beachfront game in Santa Monica not just possible, but memorable.

The talks come as Santa Monica looks for creative ways to boost tourism and economic activity. In December 2025, the City Council approved five major event partnerships—including Goldenvoice, ESPN, Club France, and Hochsitz/Silverback—backed by a $3 million economic development fund and the launch of a new Entertainment Zone on the Promenade.

A large-scale beachfront music festival expected to draw up to 35,000 attendees annually is already part of that strategy—now, hockey in the sand may be next.
