After three weeks of play, there are no unbeaten teams left on the Westside. Here’s a look at how our local schools fared.
PALISADES DOLPHINS 23 @ GRANADA HILLS HIGHLANDERS 28
Another thriller, another tough break for the Palisades Dolphins. Palisades couldn’t hold onto a double-digit lead Thursday night, falling 28-23 to Granada Hills Charter in the annual “Battle for the Charter Cup”. The loss drops Pali to 0-3 on the year, though all three defeats have come by single digits.
The Dolphins looked in total control early on. After snagging a second-quarter safety, senior QB Robert Holohan III punched in a 4-yard rushing touchdown to help send Pali into halftime with a comfortable 16-6 cushion.
Then the third quarter hit, and Granada Hills turned on the jets. The Highlanders ripped off 22 unanswered points on three second-half rushing touchdowns—and a pair of crucial two-point conversions—to surge ahead 28-16. Pali clawed back with a late fourth-quarter touchdown to trim the deficit to 28-23, but Granada Hills bled the final minutes off the clock to seal the non-league victory.
Pali has plenty of firepower, but second-half execution remains the missing piece.

VENICE GONDOLIERS 10 @ HARVARD-WESTLAKE WOLVERINES 22
The Venice Gondoliers gave Harvard-Westlake all it could handle early on Thursday night, but the host Wolverines pulled away late to secure a 22-10 victory in Studio City. The loss drops Venice to 1-2 on the season, while Harvard-Westlake improves to 3-0 for the first time in five years.
Kasra Maghami got the Wolverines on the board early with a first-quarter field goal, but Venice punched back to grab a brief 7-3 advantage on a Justen Key rushing touchdown. Harvard-Westlake reclaimed a 9-7 edge before halftime when backup quarterback CJ Woods II found Ellis Robinson for a touchdown pass with 1:38 left in the opening quarter. Venice kept the pressure on in the second half, using a third-quarter field goal to edge back ahead 10-9.
The turn of the tide came midway through the third quarter when Aaryan Mehdi Williams powered into the end zone to put the Wolverines up 16-10. Venice quarterback Benny Moreno threw for 158 yards on the night—connecting with Kieland Johnson five times for 91 yards—to keep the Gondoliers within striking distance. However, a stunning 70-yard run by Kurtis Walter in the fourth quarter set up Maghami’s third field goal of the evening, putting the game out of reach at 22-10.
Up Next: The Gondoliers will host Norwalk on Friday.
HUNTINGTON PARK SPARTANS 13 @ ST. MONICA MARINERS 49
The St. Monica Mariners put on an offensive showcase under the lights at Corsair Field on Friday, steamrolling the Huntington Park Spartans 49-13. The victory improves coach Thomas Barnes’ squad to 2-1 on the season, while Huntington Park drops to 0-3.
The Mariners seized total control early in the first quarter behind New Mexico commit Bradley Cassier. The senior quarterback connected with Christopher Barnes on a 13-yard touchdown pass—complete with a successful two-point conversion—before striking again on a 13-yard score to Anthony Mason to build an initial 20-0 lead.
St. Monica kept piling on in the second quarter. Jade Mayes punched in a 6-yard rushing touchdown, and Cassier threw his third touchdown pass of the half on a 33-yard strike to Kailan Booker, sending the Mariners into halftime with a 36-0 cushion.
The dominance continued immediately out of the locker room as Martin Tate fielded the second-half kickoff and exploded down the sideline for a 96-yard kick-return touchdown. Cal Foxson added a 53-yard touchdown pass to Austin Keough later in the third quarter to cap St. Monica’s scoring at 49. Huntington Park managed two second-half rushing touchdowns to avoid a second straight shutout, but the contest was well out of reach.
Up Next: The Mariners travel to Lawndale on Friday.
BURROUGHS BEARS 0 @ SAMOHI VIKINGS 38
The Samohi Vikings put on a clinic on their home turf Friday night, dismantling the Burroughs Bears 38-0 to post their most dominant victory of the young season.
Samohi set the tone early in the first quarter when quarterback Gryffin Glowacki connected with Chandler Paysinger for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Seconds later, the Vikings’ defense delivered a knockout blow when Estevan Padron intercepted a Burroughs pass and returned it for a 5-yard pick-six, jumping Samohi out to a rapid 14-0 lead.
The Vikings extended their edge to 21-0 before halftime thanks to a 2-yard touchdown dive by Saul Buendia.
Samohi blew the game completely open in the third quarter. Joshua Fernandez ripped off a 25-yard touchdown run, followed shortly by Buendia’s second 2-yard goal-line score of the night to make it 35-0. Late in the fourth quarter, kicker Grey Broderick put the final exclamation point on the performance by drilling a 46-yard field goal.
On top of the shutout, Samohi’s defense forced multiple takeaways, including an interception by Jake Montanez and a late fumble recovery by Leo Eastwood.
Up Next: Samohi will be on the road against Norte Vista on Friday.
BRENTWOOD EAGLES 7 @ OAK PARK EAGLES 28
In a battle of unbeaten Eagles teams, Oak Park seized control early Friday night and never looked back, eventually pulling away for a 28-7 victory over Brentwood.. Both squads entered the matchup 2-0, but it was Oak Park that maintained its perfect record behind a relentless defensive performance and timely offensive strikes.
Oak Park set the tone in the opening quarter, striking first on a touchdown drive to take an early 7-0 lead. From there, Oak Park’s defense clamped down, frustrating the Brentwood offense and forcing empty drives to keep coach Jake Ford’s unit playing from behind.
Oak Park added to its tally over the next three quarters, steadily extending the margin to 28-0 before Brentwood was able to crack the scoreboard late to break the shutout.
With the victory, Oak Park improves to 3-0 on the year, while Brentwood drops to 2-1.
Up Next: Brentwood will try to get its groove back when it visits winless Palisades on Friday night.
