After two weeks of play, only the Brentwood Eagles remain unbeaten. It was a tough night for Santa Monica schools. Here’s a look at how our Westside teams fared.
ST. MONICA MARINERS 34 @ CATHEDRAL PHANTOMS 43
The Mariners (1-1) jumped out to an early 28–16 lead at halftime thanks to three quick touchdowns by Bradley Cassier. But Cathedral roared back in the second half, capitalizing on a defensive fumble recovery and multiple running scores to take the lead. St. Monica closed the gap late with another touchdown, but a missed extra-point play kept them trailing. Cathedral answered with one final score to seal a 43–34 victory.
Up Next: St. Monica will host the Huntington Park Spartans next Friday at Corsair Field.
PALISADES DOLPHINS 23 @ HARVARD-WESTLAKE WOLVERINES 29
Pali fought to the final whistle Friday night, ultimately falling 29-23 to the Wolverines in an overtime thriller. Senior playmaker Malachi Ross led the Dolphins with an incredible 338 all-purpose yards, headlined by an explosive 90+ yard kickoff return touchdown and 110 receiving yards with a score. Quarterback Robert Holohan III powered the passing attack, going 17-for-33 for 242 yards, while running back LJ Stephens added a touchdown on the ground. Despite generating 511 total all-purpose yards and leading time of possession, the Dolphins were unable to hold off the Wolverines in the extra period. Palisades drops to 0-2 on the season.

UNIVERSITY WILDCATS 8 @ BRENTWOOD EAGLES 16
It was a tight defensive race, but in the end, the Eagles came out on top. University briefly took an 8–6 lead in the second quarter when Tareq Abdul broke free for a 44-yard rushing touchdown and converted the two-point run. Brentwood answered quickly before halftime as Jelani Taylor connected with Zaire Williams for a touchdown pass to regain a 13–8 advantage. Brentwood’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half, adding a 14-yard field goal in the third quarter to secure the low-scoring non-conference victory.
Up Next: University heads to Santee on Friday, Sept. 4 while Brentwood gets its first road test at Oak Park.
SAMOHI VIKINGS 20 @ LA CANADA SPARTANS 28
Samohi finally took the field after picking up a ‘W’ last week due to Westchester’s forfeit. La Canada built a commanding 28–7 lead into the fourth quarter, capped by a 6-yard rushing touchdown from Kody Washington. Santa Monica mounted a thrilling late rally when quarterback Gryffin Glowacki threw an 8-yard touchdown to Joshua Fernandez, followed immediately by Jake Montanez recovering a dramatic onside kick. Glowacki then connected with Odin Jorgensen on a 19-yard touchdown pass to pull Samohi within eight points, but a missed extra point ended the comeback attempt as La Canada held on for a 28–20 win.

VENICE GONDOLIERS 35 @ GRANADA HILLS HIGHLANDERS 0
The Gondoliers bounced back from last week’s loss to St. Monica Prep with a solid victory over the visiting Highlanders on Friday. Venice’s defense kept Granada Hills in check throughout the matchup, evening their season record to 1-1. Granada Hills, coming off a recent win against North Hollywood, also shifts to a 1-1 record following the defeat.
