High school football team huddled together on the blue turf under bright stadium lights at dusk.
Samohi's second loss in two weeks casts doubt on the season.

The Santa Monica Vikings walked into a North Torrance High School homecoming trap on Friday night — and got slapped with a cold 12-0 shutout.

Looking to shake off last week’s home loss to the Torrance Tartars, Samohi’s offense choked in the clutch during a painful first half, repeatedly stalling and turning the ball over deep in North territory.

The home team struck first when QB Raul Acevedo connected with Robby Hines on a 29-yard touchdown strike. Though the Saxons missed the extra point, the early 6-0 deficit put Samohi on its heels.

The Vikings appeared poised to answer in the second quarter, driving inside the North 30-yard line, but another turnover on downs killed the threat. Moments later, the fatal blow landed right before the break. North picked off a Samohi pass at their own 47-yard line and executed a quick-strike march, capped off by a 2-yard touchdown plunge from Jayden Castro with under four minutes left in the half.

The Viking defense dug in and pitched a second-half shutout, forcing multiple Saxon punts to give the offense a chance. But Samohi’s attack couldn’t find a spark, turning the ball over on downs once more in the fourth quarter to seal their fate.

To make matters worse, Samohi standout defensive playmaker Julian Viet suffered an apparent ankle injury on the game’s final play and had to be carried off the field by teammates.  The extent of his injuries were not known at the time of publication.

With the loss, the Vikings fall to 4-3, as a two-game slide threatens to derail their season.
