New name, same ice.
Santa Monica’s community skating rink returns Thursday night as Frost on 5th –– with fresh decor, new photo opps and an unlimited skate pass option.
“We wanted to do something fresh this year,” says Downtown Santa Monica Inc.’s Sydney Kovach.
But the refresh is largely in the branding.
“The layout is going to be pretty much exactly how it was last year,” Kovach tells The Sun.
The rink’s more substantial makeover actually came in 2023.
That overhaul brought a skating surface officials described as 25% larger than in previous years, clear perimeter boarding and a reusable wooden foundation replacing the old sand base.
The expanded setup included hangout areas, firepits and updated food and merchandise stalls.
Kovach said the new Frost on 5th identity is intended to emphasize the rink’s downtown location and proximity to the ocean.
“It really is a unique experience to be able to skate on real ice just a few blocks from the beach,” she says.
Visitors can expect the vibe to feel “new, fresh, frosty, and uniquely Santa Monica,” Kovach says
No big sponsor — yet
Unlike previous seasons featuring corporate branding from Netflix, Disney+ or Hulu, this year’s rink isn’t backed by big business.
“As of now, we have a lot of partners, but no major sponsor quite yet,” Kovach says.
Details are also being finalized for food service. Pop-ups and special activations are planned throughout the season.
“But folks will definitely be able to get concessions on a daily basis — quick little snacks,” Kovach assures.
Several special theme nights and activations are also being finalized and will be announced in the coming weeks.
What skating will cost
Admission for the 2026-27 season is $22 plus tax for a 60-minute skating session, with skate rental and processing fees included. Sessions may be extended at management’s discretion, depending on reservations and rink occupancy.
Frost on 5th is also offering a $165 season pass which will allow skaters unlimited access to the rink Monday – Friday, with certain blackout dates.
“We are very excited about season passes and really want families to be able to enjoy them,” she said.
Frost on 5th will kick off the season with a night of free skating this Thursday, November 5 beginning at 5:00 PM. The event will feature live music, face painting, a photo booth and more. RSVP required
