‘The Crucible’ premieres at SMC on September 25

Witch hunt, hysteria and high-stakes accusations are heading to Santa Monica College.

 

Grab your broomsticks: The Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department is staging Arthur Miller’s searing Salem witch-trial classic, The Crucible.

The drama, set in 1692 Puritan-era Salem, Massachusetts, follows a town spiraling into paranoia as accusations of witchcraft turn neighbors against neighbors — and truth becomes a dangerous thing to speak.

Performances run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from September 25 – October 4.

Miller wrote the stage classic in the 1950s as an explosive allegory for the Red Scare and McCarthy-era anti-communist investigations, but its tale of fear, false claims and mob mentality still hits hard more than seven decades later.

SMC Theatre Arts faculty member Dr. Adrianne Harrop directs the production at the Theatre Arts Main Stage on the college’s main campus, 1900 Pico Blvd.

Tickets start at $25 (plus fees) and can be purchase online at smc.edu/tickets or by calling 310-434-4265.  Seats purchased in person at the Events Center Box Office incur an additional $3 surcharge.
