The Santa Monica Fire Department will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a public Day of Service and Remembrance ceremony at Fire Station 1 next week.
The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Fire Station 1, 1337 Seventh St.
Firefighters, city officials, public-safety partners and community members are expected to gather to remember those killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks and honor the first responders who answered the call, including the 343 firefighters who died while responding at the World Trade Center in New York City.
The observance is part of the annual National Day of Service and Remembrance, but carries added weight this year as communities across the country mark a quarter-century since the attacks.
Santa Monica’s Fire Station 1 is also home to a steel artifact recovered from the World Trade Center site. The piece is permanently displayed outside the Fire Department’s community room and is available for public viewing during normal business hours.
The department said the ceremony will include moments of reflection honoring the lives lost and recognizing the courage and sacrifice of first responders.
Residents are invited to attend and stand with Santa Monica’s firefighters and public-safety community during the morning observance.
