Gavin Newsom could soon be shown the door.
More than 1.2 million Californians have signed a petition to boot the embattled Governor from office over their frustrations with his response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The state requires just 300,000 more signatures by march 17 for the recall to go to a popular vote this fall.
Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, has a 57% approval rating among likely voters in the most recent public poll by the Public Policy Institute of California, released in November. Mr. Newsom’s office referred questions to political adviser Dan Newman, who said the governor has taken bold steps to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
Activists from Rescue California, a group supporting the recall effort, say they are tapping into anger over Mr. Newsom’s policies closing businesses, schools and houses of worship to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The paper also reports that supporters of the movement have also raised more than $1.7 million.
Only once has the Golden State voted out a sitting governor. In 2003, Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced unpopular Gray Davis, whose approval rating had fallen to just 26 percent.
