One of Santa Monica’s best known pizzerias would like to accept payment in Bitcoin.

“We have been talking a lot about it over the last couple of years,” Mark Peters, General Manager of Dagwoods on Wilshire Boulevard told The Sun.

“We’re figuring out how to accept cryptocurrencies as they are becoming more mainstream and wallets are easier to use.  I definitely think we will (accept it) at some point.”

In the meantime, Dagwoods is a local partner in the new ten city ‘Bitcoin Pizza’ promotion which kicks off this weekend.

Investor and bitcoin enthusiast Anthony Pompliano came up with the concept as a way to commemorate the first bitcoin transaction ever.

As the legend goes, on May 18, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz spent 10,000 Bitcoins ($400 million today) to purchase two Papa John’s pizzas (worth about $20).

In addition to celebrating one of the worst financial deals of all time, a portion of the proceeds from each pizza sold will benefit the Human Rights Foundation’s Bitcoin Development Fund, which supports cryptocurrency developers.

The ‘Bitcoin Pizza’ promotion takes place from May 22 to 29 in cities including Chicago, Miami, Seattle and Los Angeles.

“When this fell into my lap, I was like, ‘How could I say no to Bitcoin Pizza?’” Peters said.

“Bitcoin Pizza day is such a huge, meme-y kind of celebration…but it is a funny piece of pizza history.”

Peters believes participating in the program will help drive new customers to Dagwoods.

“We have already received a number of pre-orders,” he said.

“In theory, if that continues it will be a substantial boost for business.”

All orders must be placed with a credit card at EatBitcoinPizza.com.

“I don’t think that they accept cryptocurrencies,” Peters laughed.  “We are getting paid out in U.S. dollars.”
