A beloved coach from Franklin Elementary School has suffered a heart attack and remains hospitalized while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Coach Daniel Coleman was diagnosed earlier this year with stage three non small cell lung cancer.  He has been receiving a combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

A tumor, once almost 9 cm in size, had shrunk to just 1.9, he reported on August 24.

But over the weekend, the married father of one was rushed to the emergency room at Cedars Sinai hospital where he says he suffered “a mild heart attack.”

He remains in the Intensive Care Unit.

“The consensus among my doctors is that I have heart failure and that my cardiac problems are a direct result of my cancer treatments,” he told the community in an update to his GoFundMe campaign yesterday.

“I just had a balloon pump inserted in my aorta to try and repair the failure but we are still waiting to see a turn in the right direction with my vitals. As of now I am in good spirits, in a lot of pain but I am managing.”

Coach D

Coach D, as he is known to many students, has so far received an outpouring of support from the local community.  His fundraiser has brought in more than $30,000 as of Wednesday morning.

But that may not be enough to cover quickly mounting medical expenses.

“Please keep me in your prayers and any kind word will go a long way,” he says.

“If you feel compelled to donate I would greatly appreciate it. I am sure a huge bill is looming over me.”
