A ruptured gas line forced the evacuation of 65 homes Thursday on the north side of Santa Monica.
The Santa Monica Fire Department closed several streets in a two block vicinity of Stanford Avenue and Lipton Avenue as Southern California Gas Company worked to repair damage and restore services in the neighborhood.
SMFD first responded to the call shortly after 11:40 AM.
According to the Department, a third party contractor working in the area accidentally ruptured a 16 inch underground line, causing the leak.
Residents in the vicinity of 20th Street and Idaho Avenue (approximately one mile) reported the scent of gas in social media posts.
16-inch underground gas main was ruptured during excavation causing a natural gas leak.
It is unclear when the repairs will be completed.
No injuries or damage to any structures have been reported.
