Another one bites the dust.

Broadway Cinema on Third Street Promenade has permanently closed, owner AMC Theaters announced today.  “We thank our Broadway 4 guests for their many years of patronage,” the company said in a statement.

The location, originally the Elmiro Theatre, opened in 1934.  It was operated by Cineplex Odeon and Loews before AMC took over in 2015.  The final screening — BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE — took place without fanfare on Tuesday, September 22.

At one time, Santa Monica was home to more than twenty public screens.  Less than ten remain.

“It hurts to see it go,” Mayor Phil Brock told the Santa Monica Daily Press. “I think they weren’t keeping [it] in great repair, and they probably decided not to renew their lease,” Brock said. “Having movie theaters in downtown Santa Monica is integral to [the city] as an entertainment, shopping, visiting destination.”
