A local woman is asking for forgiveness after posting what turned out to be a phony story about a double murder.
Elizabeth Vessa Gulvin landed in hot water Friday when she reported that a pregnant friend she sponsored in a 12 step program had been brutally gunned down by her husband.
Neighbors were immediately alarmed by the story, then angry when it was proven to be untrue.
“I jumped the gun based on a phone call,” Gulvin now admits. “I got played.”
Gulvin initially declined to comment to The Sun when contacted on Sunday.

After feeling the heat from online commenters, she has now asked us to publish a formal apology and explanation. It follows:
I would like to say that I apologize to all my neighbors on ND.
I created the fundraiser trying to do something nice and posted the story based on what I was told. I also told people they could make a donation to House of Ruth as well.
Clearly I was played. I have left a message for Becky’s sister saying I want the $85 I collected returned. I have also sent an email to all for people and BCC Sean Daly, stating how sorry I am and that I promise to refund their donation.
I’m not a bad person. My family has strong ties to Santa Monica as do I. My father was SMFD, my mother a nurse at Lincoln middle school. We had the family home in Santa Monica from 1965 until my mother’s passing in 2018.
I really am in bad health. The fundraisers I did for myself are legitimate. I’m penniless. I’ve been on SSDI since 1998. When the family home was sold and I was forced to move, I used my little inheritance to pay 2 years rent in advance where I’m at now, and by a little used 2009 car and take my child to Disneyland for his high school graduation. I didn’t expect to live past 2019 and wanted to give him a good memory with me not having to say ” I can’t afford it”.
I beat the odds and every day I wake up since then is a blessing. My 2 years was up Feb 2021. And if not for a friend renting my spare bedroom and my living room, I would be homeless. I don’t get much at all on SSDI and I barely make it. A my utilities are outstanding, my car registration is waaaay past due and needs a smog, I can’t even buy clothes that properly fit. So that’s why I’ve had my personal fundraisers.
I wish to humbly apologize to those that through my ignorance I received posting the information about Rebecca. I have tried calling her and her phone is disconnected. I drove by her residence but have received no answer. So I honestly don’t know what if anything has happened to her.I hope everyone can forgive me. This was a huge mistake. I’m not a bad person. I will be refunding the $85 back no matter how long it may take me.
