An Oregon teen’s bid for viral fame went up in flames — literally — when she set herself on fire while attempting to create a TikTok video.
13 year-old Destini Crane of Portland suffered severe burns and remains hospitalized since she tried to recreate the dangerous “Flaming Mirror Challenge” in her family’s bathroom on May 13.
“I was in the living room talking with my mom, and I heard her scream my name,” her mother, Kimberly Crane, told WPSD-TV News.
“So I went and opened the bathroom door and everything was on fire. Destini was on fire. Things in the bathroom were on fire!”
Kimberly said she brought her daughter outside and pulled her burning shirt off. A neighbor called 911.
The scary challenge involved drawing a sharp on a mirror using rubbing alcohol (or another flammable liquid) and lighting it up with a candle or lighter.
It was supposed to go something like this:

It is unclear exactly what happened since Destini has not been able to speak for more than two weeks. Her family believes the alcohol exploded in a poorly ventilated area, turning the seventh grader into a human candle.
“I know that when she wakes up and fully understands, she’s probably going to freak out,” her mother told ABC News.
It will likely take Destini several more months to fully recover.
“Because of the burns she’s going to have limited mobility,” her sister, Andrea, said.
“That is just going to be a lifelong thing, of her doing physical therapy to keep her mobility.”
In a February 2020 message on its website, TikTok said it does not permit content that “encourages or replicates dangerous challenges that might lead to injury.”
“More importantly, we encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior whether online or off,” it said. “Nobody wants their friends or family to get hurt filming a video or trying a stunt.”
