A man in his sixties — possibly experiencing homelessness — slit his neck in a Santa Monica coffee shop Monday morning.

Santa Monica Police responded to a call at 9:22 a.m. at Holy Grounds, near the intersection of California Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard.  The business is on the same campus as St. Monica’s Catholic Church and school.

“Officers arrived at the scene and contacted a male bleeding profusely from the neck,” an SMPD spokesperson confirmed to The Sun.

“Officers rendered first aid and summoned the Santa Monica Fire Department. A single razor blade was located near the subject.”

Eyewitness Josh Wakefield of Santa Monica was passing by as police attempted to restrain the man.

“He was wearing a hooded shirt pulled up over his head,” Wakefield told The Sun.  “I could see blood all over his stomach and his neck.”

The individual is described as a white male with a bald head and missing teeth.

“He appeared to be a transient,” Wakefield said.

Several other individuals, who appeared to in or around Reed Park, could could be heard openly discussing the incident.

“One was saying, ‘You got him agitated.  You made him do it,’” Wakefield said.

Per SMPD:  “The subject was transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment.  (As of mid afternoon) the male was listed as stable.”
