Mardi Gras Day, also known as "Fat Tuesday, is March 4.
The countdown to Mardi Gras is officially underway.
Carnival season kicks off today in New Orleans and other cities that celebrate the festive tradition.
Carnival begins on the birthday of French hero Joan of Arc and marks the end of the Christmas season. The eight week event involves feasting, drinking and parades and culminates on Mardi Gras Day (“Fat Tuesday”). It is immediately followed by Ash Wednesday and the fasting associated with Lent.
Mardi Gras Day is Tuesday, March 4.
An annual parade is held in Venice Beach to mark the occasion.
